This past weekend, Beth and I packed up the truck, loaded the kayaks, and hit the backroads for a much-needed truck camping getaway. We’ve been talking for weeks about unplugging from the noise, heading off-grid, and just enjoying the simplicity of life outdoors. With the truck bed outfitted and the cap in place, we rolled into a quiet lakeside site tucked deep into the woods, far from cell signals and city noise. The moment we arrived, the calm of the lake and the whispering trees wrapped around us like an old friend.
As the sun rose the next morning, we launched the kayaks right from shore, rods in hand and coffee mugs in the cup holders. The lake was like glass, with only the distant calls of loons echoing through the morning mist. Beth was the first to hook a bass, her grin wide as she reeled in a feisty fighter from the shallows. We spent the better part of the day drifting along the shoreline, casting into coves and under fallen logs. Between us, we caught and released more bass than we could count, soaking up every minute of peace the water had to offer.
Back at camp, we got the fire going and started prepping dinner. There’s something about cooking outdoors that just makes everything taste better. Seafood stuffed baked potatoes and a seared T- bone on the BBQ. Potatoes wrapped in foil and set right in the coals. It was glamping food, but unbelievably satisfying after a full day paddling and fishing. As the stars came out, we sat around the fire with a couple of cold drinks, quietly soaking in the moment.
The truck setup worked perfectly for the night. With the cap giving us shelter and a foam mattress spread across the bed, it was one of the coziest camp setups we’ve ever had. The sound of the loons through the pines and the distant splash of fish jumping put us to sleep better than any white noise machine ever could. There’s a certain comfort in knowing everything you need is right there in the truck — it’s freedom on four wheels.
That night brought a huge thunderstorm and a lot of rain with us waking up to a soaked tent and gear. We decided to pack up and head out.
By the time we packed up and headed home, we were sun-kissed, slightly sore, and completely refreshed. Truck camping with Beth, catching bass from the kayaks, and eating like kings around the campfire — it was the kind of weekend that fills your cup and reminds you why the outdoors keeps calling. We’re already talking about the next one. Just GITT N GO — that’s all it takes.
