If there’s one time of year we look forward to the most when it comes to camping, it’s late summer and early fall.
There’s just something about this time of year that makes getting out into the woods, setting up camp, and sitting beside a lake feel a little more special. The days can still be warm and beautiful, but the evenings start to cool down, the crowds begin to disappear, and you can finally enjoy those long campfire nights without melting in the summer heat.
For us, this is when camping really hits its sweet spot.
🔥 Perfect Campfire Weather
One of our favorite things about camping is sitting around the campfire at the end of the day.
Late summer and early fall bring those cooler evenings that make a campfire feel even better. There’s nothing quite like grabbing a camping chair, getting comfortable beside the fire, and watching the flames while the sun disappears over the lake.
It’s the kind of camping where you don’t feel like you have anywhere else to be.
🌡️ Comfortable Days and Cooler Nights
The middle of summer can sometimes be brutally hot, especially when you’re sleeping in a tent or camper.
By late August and into September, temperatures often become much more comfortable. You can spend the day hiking, exploring, fishing, kayaking, or just relaxing around camp without dealing with excessive heat.
Then, when evening arrives, you get those cool temperatures that make sleeping much more comfortable.
It’s basically the best of both worlds.
🦟 Fewer Bugs
Let’s be honest—we love camping, but we don’t necessarily love getting eaten alive by mosquitoes.
One of the big advantages of late summer and early fall camping is that cooler temperatures can mean fewer annoying bugs.
That means more time sitting outside, enjoying dinner by the fire, and relaxing without constantly reaching for the bug spray.
We’ll take that any day!
🌅 Incredible Sunsets
Late summer sunsets can be absolutely incredible.
There’s something about sitting beside a lake with the sun dropping below the horizon, reflecting across the water, while the campfire starts glowing beside you.
Those are the moments that make you stop, put the phone down, and just take it all in.
Sometimes the best part of camping isn’t the destination or the gear—it’s simply sitting there and watching the day come to an end.
🍂 The First Signs of Fall
Another reason we love this time of year is watching the seasons slowly change.
Depending on where you’re camping, you may start seeing the first hints of fall colours appearing throughout the forest.
The combination of warm summer days, cooler nights, and the beginning of autumn makes late summer and early fall feel completely different from camping in July.
It’s like getting a preview of fall while still hanging onto summer.
🏕️ Fewer Crowds
Once summer vacations start winding down and families get back into their regular routines, many campgrounds become noticeably quieter.
And that’s something we really appreciate.
There’s nothing wrong with a busy campground, but there’s something special about finding a quiet campsite, hearing the sounds of nature, and having a little more peace and space around you.
Sometimes you just want to get away from everything.
🎣 Great Time for Fishing

Late summer and early fall can also be a great time to spend some time on the water.
Whether you’re an experienced angler or just enjoy throwing a line in while camping, cooler temperatures can make being around the lake much more enjoyable.
And honestly, even when the fish aren’t cooperating, there’s nothing wrong with sitting beside the water with a fishing rod in your hand and enjoying the scenery.
🥾 Better Hiking Weather
We also love exploring when the temperatures start to drop.
Long hikes that can feel exhausting during the hottest part of summer become much more enjoyable when the air is cooler.
It’s the perfect time to explore trails, check out new areas, find a scenic lookout, or simply wander through the woods and see where the trail takes you.
After all…
If you ain’t lost, you ain’t doin’ it right!
☕ Cozy Camping Nights
Late summer and early fall camping is also when camping starts feeling a little cozier.
Hot coffee in the morning.
A warm breakfast cooked outside.
A relaxing afternoon by the lake.
Dinner around the campfire.
And eventually, sitting under the stars as the temperature drops.
These are the simple things that keep us coming back to camping.
🌲 The Best of Both Seasons
Maybe the biggest reason late summer and early fall is our favorite time of year is because you get the best of both seasons.
You still get warm summer days, but you also get cool fall evenings.
You get green forests while the first fall colours begin appearing.
You get beautiful sunsets, comfortable sleeping temperatures, fewer bugs, and fewer crowds.
And you get plenty of excuses to sit around a campfire a little longer.
🏕️ Why We Keep Coming Back
Camping isn’t always about having the newest gear, the biggest campsite, or the perfect weather.
Sometimes it’s about getting away from the everyday routine.
It’s about sitting beside a lake with someone you enjoy being around, listening to the fire crackle, watching the sun go down, and realizing that this is exactly where you want to be.
That’s why late summer and early fall will always be one of our favorite times of the year to camp.
So grab your camping gear, load up the truck, find a campsite, and get outside.
The summer isn’t over yet—and fall is just getting started.
